From NewsXR: U.S. Concludes 11th Night of Strikes on Iran as Trump Threatens Underground Nuclear Sites

The United States has concluded an 11th consecutive night of military strikes against Iranian targets, while President Trump has now explicitly threatened to target underground Iranian nuclear facilities if Tehran refuses to end its escalation.

The latest round of strikes keeps the U.S.-Iran conflict at the center of international attention, with military pressure continuing across the region and the Strait of Hormuz crisis still raising concerns over shipping, fuel prices and global security.

The broader Middle East remains unstable. Israel is reportedly working to divide parts of Gaza with barrier construction, while the U.S.-led air campaign continues to shape the regional military picture. NewsXR will continue tracking how these developments may affect national security, energy costs and local families with military ties.

Confirmed EF1 Tornado and 105 MPH Microburst Leave Southern Tier in Recovery Mode

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has confirmed that Saturday’s severe weather system produced a 15.7-mile EF1 tornado across Broome and Delaware counties, along with a powerful 105 mph microburst in the Hancock area.

The tornado touched down near Farnham Road in Sanford, traveled southeast through Deposit and Hale Eddy, briefly crossed into Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and lifted near Peas Eddy Road in Hancock. Tornado winds reached 95 mph. The separate Hancock-area microburst reached 105 mph, while another 70 to 80 mph microburst was recorded farther north in Marathon.

The storms uprooted hundreds of trees, damaged homes, tore metal skirting from underneath structures and knocked down key transmission lines. A second round of severe storms later knocked out power to thousands more residents.

NYSEG deployed more than 400 utility workers across heavily damaged areas, including Greene, Harpursville, Colesville and Owego. Broome County emergency officials also opened water and dry ice distribution sites at the Deposit Fire Station, the Lisle Fire Station and the Northern Broome Senior Center in Whitney Point.

Residents are also being encouraged to use the Ready Broome emergency app for live alert tracking and local emergency updates.

Legislature Disruption, Hawley Street Encampment Closure Continue to Shape Housing Debate

The fallout continues after a Broome County Legislature meeting at the Hawley Street Office Building turned chaotic, with roughly 20 protesters shouting down lawmakers before deputies removed the group from the chambers.

At least one physical altercation was reported during the disruption. Salka Valerio, 41, of Binghamton was arrested after deputies said she refused to vacate her seat and resisted removal. A second person, Brian McPeek, 59, of Binghamton, was also charged in connection with the disruption.

The Hawley Street homeless advocacy encampment has since been fully dismantled after 24 days. Organizers said the transition had already been planned and that remaining tents, sleeping bags and supplies were distributed directly to local unhoused residents.

Parkway Inn Dispute Intensifies Between County and Vestal Officials

A sharp dispute has erupted between Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and Vestal Town Supervisor Maria Sexton over conditions and inspections at the Parkway Inn, where unhoused individuals have been placed.

Garnar criticized the inspection push as cruel and reckless, arguing that it could force vulnerable people out of temporary shelter. Sexton’s office pointed to serious code concerns, including lack of working smoke detectors and inadequate beds for children.

The dispute highlights the larger housing crisis still facing Broome County after the Knights Inn fire, the Hawley Street encampment closure and ongoing pressure on emergency shelter systems.

From NewsXR: U.S. Launches 10th Night of Strikes on Iran as Hormuz Crisis Deepens

The United States launched a 10th consecutive night of military strikes against Iran Monday night as the war widened around the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. forces continued responding to the deaths of American service members in the region.

U.S. Central Command is targeting Iranian command centers, maritime capabilities, air defense systems, missile sites and drone launch locations as part of an effort to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten global shipping and U.S. allied interests.

Iran has continued retaliatory attacks against U.S. and allied assets, including military and infrastructure targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. The conflict is also disrupting shipping and energy flows, with commercial tankers still under threat in the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi forces threatening a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia, and oil prices rising as regional risk spreads beyond Iran itself.

President Donald Trump has warned Iran that it will face continued consequences for American casualties and attacks on U.S. interests. Iran’s military and the IRGC have responded by threatening stronger action and continuing pressure on regional maritime routes.

The local impact remains economic and personal. A prolonged Middle East war can affect gas prices, shipping costs, markets, military families and the cost of everyday goods across the Southern Tier.

Housing Crisis Debate Continues After Legislature Disruption and Encampment Closure

Broome County’s housing crisis remains a central local issue after the deadly Knights Inn fire, the Hawley Street protest encampment and the July 16 disruption at the Broome County Legislature meeting.

The Legislature meeting disruption led to two arrests after deputies removed about 20 people from the chamber. Protesters interrupted the meeting while demanding housing reforms connected to emergency shelter conditions and the county’s use of motels.

The Parkway Inn dispute also continues to fuel public tension. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar criticized Vestal Town Supervisor Maria Sexton over the town’s handling of code violations and emergency housing occupants, calling an abrupt evacuation demand reckless and cruel after county inspectors determined an immediate evacuation was not necessary.

The system began July 16 and can send incident numbers and case-status updates to people who contact 911 or the Sheriff’s Office from a mobile phone. The system is intended to improve transparency and reduce the need for residents and victims to repeatedly call for case updates.

    COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Empowering Food Access in the Southern Tier

Today’s Community Spotlight focuses on local farmers markets and the growing push to make fresh food more accessible across Broome County.

The Broome County Regional Farmers Market on Upper Front Street has launched a digital SNAP program, allowing SNAP users to receive digital benefits through a QR code stored on their phones. The program is designed to make it easier for families to buy fresh local food without relying only on paper checks.

The Broome County Regional Farmers Market and the Binghamton Farmers’ Market are also part of a wider nutrition-support network that includes FreshConnect, Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits, Produce Prescriptions, VeggieRX and veterans coupons.

Those programs do two things at once: they help families access healthier food, and they keep more food dollars in the Southern Tier agricultural economy.

The Broome County Regional Farmers Market is located at 840 Upper Front Street and operates year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Binghamton Farmers’ Market operates seasonally at Recreation Park on Beethoven Street on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October.

MYBROOME™ THEN – 100 YEARS AGO TODAY IN BROOME COUNTY

Masked “Deputies” Rob Roadhouse, Steal Chickens and Peas

On July 21, 1926, local papers carried one of the stranger Southern Tier crime stories of the era.

James “Pop” Lesco, a roadhouse proprietor off Windsor Road, reported that three men arrived in a large touring car, with two of them wearing masks and claiming to be sheriff’s deputies. They allegedly demanded money. When Lesco refused, the men changed tactics.

They ordered pork sandwiches, stole two bushels of peas, bagged 43 of his finest chickens and sped off.

The odd roadhouse robbery appeared alongside other local headlines, including Endicott Johnson beginning shoemaking operations in a new addition to the B.B.B. shoe factory, a violent lightning strike damaging a home at 91 Union Street in Johnson City, and a Lake Avenue dog dispute that escalated into gunfire.
