Greetings Neighbors: As an organization, we do not pick sides in political campaigns or endorse candidates. However, we do support our current Sheriff, Fred Akshar, and we have consistently recognized the great job he has done leading our county’s law enforcement. We like the man and the job he has done, or at least we thought we did.
    ‎
That is why recent reports regarding the daily food conditions at the Broome County Correctional Facility are so deeply disappointing.
    ‎
This isn’t about one specific incident or outbreak. This is about a basic, everyday assumption. Sheriff Akshar has explicitly claimed a commitment to improving jail food, and he has frequently cited faith and “God, family, and community” as his guiding principles. We believe in these very same values. Because we believe in them, we are deeply taken aback and disappointed by reports that the reality on the inmate trays hasn’t actually improved.
    ‎
When Sheriff Akshar took office, he inherited a long, historic legacy of serious allegations regarding inadequate prisoner food quality. Knowing him to be a person who publicly places faith and moral fiber at the center of his leadership, we fully trusted and assumed he would treat those under his charge like human beings. And a human being deserves a decent meal.
    ‎
Instead, reports from inside show that despite administrative contract changes, real nutritional and quality improvements have not materialized.
    ‎
Sheriff Akshar, we continue to support your leadership, but we urge you to look closer at what is happening inside the jail kitchen. A person who guides their life by faith and community ensures that even those in our care are treated with basic human decency. Please fulfill the promise you made and make the quality of inmate meals the urgent priority it needs to be. We ask that you keep your word and improve the conditions on the ground (on a plate really). We wanted to remind you of your promise and we’re sure you’ll keep your word, we hope so.

THE NIGHTLY WRAP – Friday, August 7, 2026

by NewsXR | Serving Broome County & The Southern Tier

Your closing loop for the day. The facts, tonight.

🌍 World & National News Tonight: Strait of Hormuz Transit and Global Recovery

International Transit Talks and Regional Security:

Diplomatic and maritime-security discussions continued on Friday, August 7, 2026, around proposed Strait of Hormuz transit protocols, including Iranian-monitored inbound channels and Omani-controlled outbound corridors. Following recent maritime disruptions, international maritime administrators and naval liaisons worked to finalize standardized transit safety protocols for commercial cargo vessels. In Europe, international infrastructure teams reported ongoing grid-recovery progress across western sectors of Ukraine to restore electrical stability ahead of the autumn utility cycle.

    Why It Matters Locally:

A disruption in the Strait of Hormuz does not just hit Wall Street—it hits Broome County. Increased shipping insurance and rerouted cargo ships directly dictate wholesale diesel costs for local trucking fleets, which quickly trickles down to higher grocery prices at the checkout line and increased material costs for local construction projects. Local transport companies and regional industrial employers are watching these talks closely as baseline operating expenses fluctuate.

🏛️ Local News Tonight: Battery NY Redevelopment, En-Joie Golf Course Transfer, and ALPR Audits

    The Facts:

    • Battery NY Physical Conversion Begins in Johnson City: Heavy construction and interior physical conversion work officially commenced Friday at the former Gannett Central New York Production Facility off CFJ Boulevard in Johnson City. Turning an empty 10-acre newspaper printing plant into a $114 million advanced manufacturing and research complex signals a major economic shift for the village. It anchors Johnson City’s high-tech revitalization, promising a footprint for future clean-energy jobs and expanding Binghamton University’s presence in the urban core.

    • Broome County Advances En-Joie Course Transfer Proposal: Broome County officials are pushing a formal proposal to take ownership of Endicott’s historic En-Joie Golf Course before the current management deal expires on December 31, 2026. The county argues it has the financial leverage to replace the course’s failing irrigation system—a multi-million dollar necessity to keep the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open in town. However, the Village of Endicott must decide whether to surrender a major municipal asset or solicit outside bids that could complicate the tournament’s long-term future.

    • Binghamton ALPR and Flock Camera Audit Discussions: City officials and community stakeholders reviewed draft compliance frameworks for automated license plate readers (ALPR) and Flock safety cameras across Binghamton. The proposed audit protocols would establish strict rules on how often police can query camera data, how long that data is retained, and who oversees compliance—aiming to balance the undeniable law-enforcement value of tracking suspect vehicles with the public’s right to privacy and civil-liberty protections.

🏗️ Southern Tier & New York News Tonight: NYSDOT Corridor Upgrades and Regional Grants

    The Facts:

    • NYSDOT Region 9 Paving and Corridor Maintenance: The New York State Department of Transportation Region 9 office maintained active daytime work zones along the Interstate 81 and Route 17-I-86 corridors on Friday. Motorists traveling through Broome, Tioga, and Cortland counties should expect rolling lane closures and sudden traffic slowdowns through the weekend. Crews are racing to execute late-summer road repairs, bridge joint maintenance, and safety sign installations before the autumn weather window closes and school bus routes resume.

    • Cortland Memorial Foundation Secures Saint Agatha Foundation Grant: The Cortland Memorial Foundation received a $21,779 grant from the Saint Agatha Foundation on Friday, marking a direct upgrade for regional breast cancer patients. The funding secures a Neoprobe surgical navigation system using gamma detection technology. This allows surgical teams to perform highly precise sentinel lymph node biopsies and targeted tumor localizations, keeping advanced oncological care accessible without forcing patients to travel out of the region.

🚨 Public Safety Tonight: Broome County Arrests, Investigations, and Emergency Responses

    The Facts:

Local law enforcement agencies, state police, and emergency dispatchers across Broome County released verified blotter reports and incident updates for Friday, August 7, 2026:

      • Thomas E. Birtch Jr., 58, of Windsor, NY, was arrested by Broome County Sheriff’s deputies and charged with Second-Degree Unlawful Surveillance, a Class E Felony, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Forcible Touching, a Class A Misdemeanor.

      • Alexander J. Fahs, 34, of Endicott, NY, was arrested by Sheriff’s deputies in the Town of Union and charged with First-Degree Criminal Contempt, a Class E Felony, and Third-Degree Criminal Mischief, a Class E Felony.

    • Police Investigations: Binghamton Police Department detectives and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office pursued active leads in an ongoing firearm-discharge and property damage investigation centered around North Street and Moore Avenue in Endwell.

    • Crashes & Road Safety: Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 81 North near Exit 6 in Chenango Bridge on Friday afternoon. The crash caused temporary commuter delays and minor lane restrictions while emergency responders and towing services cleared the roadway. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

    • Fire / EMS / Emergency Response: NYSEG technical crews finalized pressure testing on Route 11 commercial supply lines in Kirkwood following valve maintenance, maintaining normal distribution across the corridor.

    • Public Safety Watch: Local law enforcement maintained a high-visibility security presence across Otsiningo Park and surrounding Binghamton corridors on Friday to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety for the opening day of Spiedie Fest.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    🌤️ Weather Tonight

    Forecast Tonight:

Warm midsummer air and rising humidity remain over the Susquehanna and Chenango river valleys tonight, with an overnight low near 65°F under partly cloudy skies.

    Tomorrow’s Outlook:

Saturday brings continued summer warmth and humidity, with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s and a chance of an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm through the Spiedie Fest weekend.

🏆 Sports Tonight: Rumble Ponies Set Franchise Records in 23-3 Blowout

Top Sports Tonight: Rumble Ponies Set Franchise Records in 23-3 Blowout

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies set franchise records Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium, routing the Hartford Yard Goats 23-3 with 23 runs scored and a 20-run victory margin. Mitch Voit went 5-for-6 with 5 runs scored, while Billy Amick hit two home runs. The Ponies were scheduled to host Hartford again tonight at Mirabito Stadium at 7:00 PM.

    En-Joie and DICK’S Open Preparations:

Grounds supervisors at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott continued fine-tuning turf conditions on Friday. With the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open approaching, maintaining PGA Tour Champions-level greens requires precise midsummer water and fertilization management, especially as local humidity and temperatures spike.

Section IV Fall Sports Preseason Reminders:

High school athletic departments across Broome County remind parents that mandatory physical examinations and health portal clearance uploads are due. Missing these registration windows means student-athletes will be barred from taking the field on day one of mandatory varsity and junior varsity preseason tryouts, which begin later this month.

🎡 Events Tonight: Spiedie Fest Opening Day, First Friday, and Weekend Festivals

    The Facts:

    • 42nd Annual Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally: Otsiningo Park gates opened at 3:00 PM, the midway opened at 4:00 PM, and the evening hot air balloon launch was scheduled for 6:00 PM, with live music featuring Matt Cornwell at 6:00 PM and Downtown Men at 7:00 PM.

    The Facts:

    • Broome County Land Bank Blight Remediation: The Land Bank is finalizing contractor bidding documentation for three single-family home restorations on Binghamton’s East Side and First Ward. This initiative directly targets neighborhood blight, turning abandoned or tax-foreclosed properties back into taxable, affordable housing for local families.

    • Strand Commons Development in Endicott: The public art park on Washington Avenue continues drawing pedestrian traffic, featuring the illuminated six-foot steel sphere sculpture depicting Endicott’s historic Square Deal Arch. The installation serves as an anchor for downtown revitalization, creating a walkable corridor designed to increase foot traffic for surrounding small businesses.

    • Tobacco-Free Broome & Tioga Grant Pool: Applications remain open for the $35,000 Tobacco-Free Broome & Tioga community grant pool. This is real money available to local municipalities, youth bureaus, and nonprofits willing to implement smoke-free policies in public parks and outdoor spaces, directly funding community health improvements.

    Community Prayer Request

Tonight, we ask our community to join us in prayer for the nurses, first responders, police officers, firefighters, EMS crews, dispatchers, hospital workers, and public servants who remain on duty while many of us prepare to sleep.

As we close our doors, turn off our lights, and settle in for the night, they are still out there. They are patrolling roads, answering calls, helping the sick, responding to emergencies, comforting families, protecting neighborhoods, and carrying responsibilities most people never see.

Thank you, LORD, for these servants. Thank you for their courage, their patience, their sacrifice, and their willingness to keep going when others need help. Bless them, protect them, strengthen them, and bring them safely home to the people who love them.

We also pray for every person they may be called to help tonight. May the hurting find care, may the frightened find comfort, may the sick find healing, and may every responder be guided with wisdom, mercy, and protection.

    Amen.

And Now A Bed-time Story will return tomorrow.

And that’s a Wrap. Goodnight neighbors and friends.

THE NIGHTLY WRAP – Sunday, August 2, 2026

by NewsXR | Serving Broome County & The Southern Tier

Your closing loop for the weekend. The facts, tonight.

🌍 WORLD TONIGHT: Iran Conflict De-escalation Efforts

    The Situation:

Tentative diplomatic channels opened Sunday aimed at de-escalating the crisis between Iran and regional forces, following Saturday’s significant exchanges. While the immediate military intensity has subsided overnight, defense systems across the Middle East remain on high alert as mediators from Oman and Qatar attempt to establish a formal ceasefire framework. The situation is fragile, with both sides holding firm positions.

    Why It Matters Locally:

The potential for sustained conflict continues to create economic ripples in the Southern Tier tonight. Global oil prices, which spiked on Saturday, saw a slight stabilization during Sunday trading but remain volatile. Local energy analysts are watching pump prices closely, warning of a potential 10-to-15 cent increase at local stations by mid-week if the diplomatic talks fail. We continue to monitor for statements from our Congressional delegation regarding the federal response to the crisis.

A Note on Community Vigilance and Solidarity

Given the volatility of this conflict and Iran’s history of state-sponsored terrorism as a geopolitical tool, law enforcement agencies are advising the public to remain aware of their surroundings.

In Broome County, we stand as one community. It is vital to remember that this situation is a matter of foreign policy and state action. In fact, many members of our local Arab and Muslim communities are refugees who fled the very type of oppressive, authoritarian regime that we are now in conflict with. They are our neighbors, families, and business owners who sought freedom and peace in the Southern Tier.

However, in times of heightened global tension, we all share the responsibility of keeping our community safe. If you see something, say something.

To report suspicious activity in our area, please use the following local and federal contacts:

    • Broome County Security / Emergency Services: Dial 911

    • Binghamton Police Department Tip Line: (607) 772-7080

    • New York State Police (Troop C): (607) 561-7400

    • Department of Homeland Security (DHS) / FBI Field Office (Albany Division, covering Southern Tier): (518) 465-7551

🏛️ LOCAL TONIGHT: Binghamton Man Arrested in Friday Shooting

    The Facts:

Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski announced Sunday the arrest of an 18-year-old city resident in connection with the shooting that occurred late Friday night in the area of Mill and Chenango streets on the North Side.

Following a rapid investigation by BPD detectives, the suspect was taken into custody without incident at a residence on the city’s East Side early Saturday morning and is currently being held at BPD headquarters. Police recovered a handgun believed to be used in the crime. The suspect is facing charges of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The 24-year-old male victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

    Why It Matters Locally:

This is the fifth shooting incident in Binghamton in 2026, a statistic that continues to drive intense community debate tonight about neighborhood safety and the effectiveness of current anti-violence measures. While Mayor Kraham has implemented “Operation Safe Streets” and increased patrols, this latest incident underscores the persistent challenge of gun violence in the urban core. The suspect’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning in City Court.

🚨 CRIME WATCH TONIGHT: Broome County Arrests

NewsXR has reviewed the latest arrest logs and news releases from across the Southern Tier for Sunday, August 2, 2026:

    • Endicott Police Domestic Incident: Endicott Police responded to a reported domestic dispute at an apartment complex on East Main Street on Sunday afternoon. A 39-year-old Endicott man was taken into custody and faces charges of Criminal Mischief and Harassment following an altercation with a family member.

    • Vestal Police DWI Arrest: Vestal Police arrested a 21-year-old Binghamton woman early Sunday morning following a traffic stop on African Road. She was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) after failing field sobriety tests, with a BAC reported over the legal limit.

    • Johnson City Police Vandalism Arrest: JCPD officers responded to a report of property damage at a business on Harry L. Drive on Sunday evening. A 17-year-old Johnson City male was located nearby and charged with Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree for allegedly spray-painting the building. He was released on an appearance ticket.

    • State Police and Sheriff Activity: The New York State Police Troop C and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office report a relatively quiet Sunday, primarily focused on standard traffic enforcement along I-81 and Route 17. No major felony arrests or significant public releases were issued by these agencies today.

🎡 THEMATIC FEATURE: Spiedie Fest Final Day Breakdown

The 2026 Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally is wrapping up at Otsiningo Park tonight. Here is your final report for the weekend.

    Spiedie Scene Today:

Despite the heat wave continuing on Sunday, attendance was strong for the final day. The balloon launch scheduled for Sunday morning was cancelled due to high ground winds, a decision confirmed by pilot briefings, disappointing early risers. However, the afternoon musical acts and food vendors drew large, steady crowds.

    Traffic Report Tonight:

Significant congestion is expected on Front Street and surrounding access roads in the Town of Union as attendees exit Otsiningo Park this evening. New York State Police and Binghamton Police are on-site managing the traffic flow, but major delays are inevitable. Commuters not attending the festival are advised to use alternate routes, such as the Upper Front Street corridor or Interstate 81, until the event clears.

🛡️ PUBLIC SAFETY TONIGHT: Broome County Watch

    • Drought Watch Continues: The extreme heat wave has deepened the drought conditions across Broome County. Farmers in the Southern Tier are tonight assessing significant crop stress and yield loss. Local agricultural officials are urging residents to adhere to voluntary water conservation measures, as reservoir levels in the Susquehanna and Chenango watersheds are dropping rapidly.

    • Fire Department Log: The Binghamton Fire Department responded to a small brush fire near the Confluence Park walking trails late Sunday afternoon. The fire was quickly contained by crews, and no structures were threatened. The cause remains under investigation, but officials warn that dry vegetation creates a high fire risk.

🕯️ THE WALL OF HONOR: Honoring Service and Sacrifice Tonight

Tonight, we remember New York State Trooper David C. Brinkerhoff.

Trooper Brinkerhoff, 29, died in the line of duty on April 25, 2007. He was shot and killed during a search operation for a gunman in the Town of Thompson, Sullivan County.

A member of the State Police for four years, Trooper Brinkerhoff was assigned to SP Liberty and was a member of the specialized Mobile Response Team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. His commitment to protecting the people of New York and his bravery in the face of danger will never be forgotten.

We extend our deepest respect to his family, friends, and the men and women of Troop C.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

    🌤️ WEATHER TONIGHT

    Forecast Tonight:

It remains very warm and muggy across Broome County. Skies will remain mostly clear with an overnight low dropping to only 71°F. Winds will be light and variable.

✨ AND NOW, A BEDTIME STORY: Lil Susie’s People-Watching Adventure

Deep in the brush near the Confluence Park walking trails, lived a very small, very fast, and very curious field mouse named Lil Susie.

Susie loved people. She didn’t understand them, of course—she was too little for things like “spiedies” or “balloon rallies”—but she loved to watch what they did.

Tonight, Susie was on a mission. She knew that the giant Spiedie Fest had just ended at nearby Otsiningo Park, and Susie knew that where there were humans, there was always treasure left behind.

Susie wiggled her whiskers, put on her favorite disguise—a tiny berry cap she had found—and used a blade of grass as a hiking stick. She darted across the walking paths, faster than a falling leaf.

When she reached the festival grounds, the giant balloons were being packed away, but the field was full of discarded human things.

Susie saw the remnants of a concert: a single, sparkly blue earring that glittered in the moonlight. “A treasure for a giant!” she chirped.

But she also saw something very important. It was a small, silver foil wrapper from a festival snack, with just one single crumb of salty pretzel left on it.

“A feast!” Susie exclaimed, her tiny heart doing a happy flutter.

Using her powerful field-mouse muscles, Susie flipped the wrapper over and discovered a perfect, curved shape. It was a tiny silver canoe!

“Scientific discovery!” Susie declared. “I will use this to sail the Chenango River!“

It was very hard work, but Susie pushed, pulled, and wiggled the foil canoe all the way back to her cozy burrow by the riverbank. When she got it inside, she realized it wasn’t just a canoe.

It was the perfect, shiny bed.

Susie snuggled down into the pretzel-foil sleeping bag, closed her eyes, and dreamed of sparkly earrings and giant silver forks.

Good night, Chenango River. Good night, sparkly earring. Good night, Broome County.

    🌙 The Nightcap

That’s the wrap on Sunday, August 2, 2026. You’re informed on the arrest in Binghamton, the de-escalation in Iran, and Lil Susie’s great Spiedie Fest adventure. As you settle in, know that your local community is watching out for you.

Rest easy, Broome County. We’ve got the watch.

MyBroome is being built to be more than a news site. The Broome County Newswire and NewsXR Newswire will be major parts of it, but the larger vision is a locally focused online home for Broome County and the Southern Tier – a place for local news, local conversation, local events, local businesses, local buying and selling, community forums, profiles, and neighborhood connection.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. – Welcome to Broome Newswire, the local news and public information center inside MyBroome.com.

Broome Newswire now has its own dedicated home at:

    newswire.mybroome.com

This move gives the Newswire its own independent space inside the larger MyBroome.com platform. It also gives our newsroom and publishing system room to grow without being crowded into the same file structure as the main MyBroome.com landing portal, BroomeSocial™, community features, events, marketplace tools, forums, chat areas, and future interactive services.

That matters because MyBroome.com is not being built as a single basic website. It is being built as Broome County’s virtual town square.

    The main portal will remain:

    MyBroome.com

Broome Newswire will serve as the local news and public information section of that platform, covering local stories, public updates, community information, public safety items, events, local government, schools, businesses, organizations, and news connected to Broome County and the surrounding Southern Tier.

Moving Broome Newswire to its own subdomain is a forward-thinking platform decision. It allows the Newswire to operate in its own dedicated space while still remaining fully connected to MyBroome.com.

It also helps protect the larger platform. If one section needs updates, maintenance, redesign work, expansion, or future upgrades, it can be handled without disrupting the entire MyBroome system.

The goal is simple: each major part of MyBroome.com should have its own space, its own structure, and room to grow.

Broome Newswire is one part of a larger local platform that will include BroomeSocial™, BroomeEvents, MarketXR, BroomeChats, Community Forums, NewsXR Sports Center, News, Weather & Sports, and future Phase Two features including MapXR – Broome County.

Some links, pages, and features may continue to change as we build toward launch.

MyBroome.com is scheduled for official launch on July 15, 2026, at noon.
