Hormuz Talks Continue as Energy Markets Watch the Waterway

Diplomatic and maritime-security talks continued Saturday around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping lanes. Iran said a deal involving Oman is close, but officials also warned that an agreement alone would not automatically reopen the waterway. That matters far beyond the Persian Gulf because any threat to tanker movement can affect fuel prices, freight costs, shipping risk, and the price of goods that move through regional supply chains.

For Broome County and the Southern Tier, the local connection is practical. A disruption in one of the world’s major energy corridors can eventually reach local households through gasoline, diesel, grocery transport, delivery costs, farm operations, construction materials, and the cost of doing business. The important point today is not that the route is stabilized. It is that the risk remains active enough for energy markets, shippers, and governments to keep watching.

In Ukraine, European support for emergency power, heating, water, and grid systems continues as communities prepare for future demand after repeated attacks on energy infrastructure. The wider local connection remains energy stability. Damage to major power systems overseas can influence aid spending, fuel markets, defense policy, and infrastructure planning far from the war zone.

Ransom Notes Keep Nancy Guthrie Case in National Spotlight

Authorities in Arizona continue seeking information in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after officials released ransom notes connected to the case. One note demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency, and another claimed Guthrie had died after being taken. The case has drawn national attention because of Guthrie’s age, the ransom demand, the public release of the notes, and Savannah Guthrie’s public plea for help.

The case also shows why public visibility can become part of an investigation. When authorities release sensitive material such as ransom notes, they are asking the public to notice handwriting, phrasing, local connections, suspicious behavior, or details that might mean something to someone outside the investigative team.

    SOUTHERN TIER NOW by NewsXR

Fruit Growers Remain Connected to Federal Disaster Assistance After Spring Freeze

Fruit growers across New York, including producers in Southern Tier counties, remain connected to federal disaster assistance after spring freeze damage hit apple, stone fruit, grape, and strawberry crops. Governor Kathy Hochul’s office reported that April frost caused serious losses for many fruit operations, with state agriculture estimates showing losses ranging from 15 percent to 100 percent and more than $30 million in estimated economic damage.

The USDA Farm Service Agency later designated New York counties as natural disaster areas because of freeze and frost damage, opening access to emergency credit for eligible producers. For Southern Tier readers, this is not just a farm story. Fruit operations support farm markets, cider producers, seasonal workers, trucking, equipment work, agritourism, and rural communities that depend on a healthy growing season.

Route 17 Bridge Work Remains Part of Southern Tier Travel

State Route 17 remains part of the Southern Tier’s summer construction picture. NYSDOT announced a $4.5 million project to strengthen State Route 17 bridges in Broome County, with construction expected during the 2026 construction season and ramp closures tied to the work.

That matters today because Saturday travel is already heavier with Spiedie Fest, summer events, baseball traffic, shopping, and weekend trips. Drivers moving through Vestal, Endicott, Johnson City, and Binghamton should keep construction-zone slowdowns, ramp changes, and lane restrictions in mind before heading out.

    LOCAL NEWS NOW

Route 363 Gateway Project Moves Into Construction Phase

Construction activity is moving forward around Binghamton’s Route 363 and Route 434 Gateway Project, a major downtown infrastructure project designed to rework highway access, improve pedestrian connections, and strengthen the link between downtown Binghamton, the riverfront, and nearby redevelopment areas. NYSDOT says construction was expected to begin in summer 2026.

For Binghamton, this is more than roadwork. Route 363 has long shaped how traffic moves around the downtown core, the Brandywine Highway, Court Street, the riverfront, and nearby commercial areas. A major change to that corridor can affect drivers, walkers, emergency access, future development, and how downtown connects to the Chenango River corridor.

Broome County 287(g) Fight Continues Ahead of August 25 Deadline

Broome County’s participation in a 287(g) immigration-enforcement agreement remains a live local and state issue as New York moves toward requiring existing 287(g) agreements to end by August 25. The Attorney General’s Office and Governor Hochul announced that the Office of Immigrant Trust sent letters to local law-enforcement agencies with current 287(g) agreements, stating that the agreements must be terminated under the new state law.

Broome County is part of the Southern Tier impact. WSKG reported that multiple Southern Tier counties, including Broome, were among the agencies told to unwind their agreements by the state deadline. The issue remains politically charged because it sits at the intersection of local policing, jail operations, state authority, and federal immigration enforcement.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office agreement was tied to the jail and allowed some corrections officers to serve immigration warrants on people already detained in the county jail. That detail matters because the agreement was not described as a general street-enforcement model, but as a jail-based warrant-service arrangement.

County Route 48 Bridge Planning Remains a Long-Term Vestal-Endicott Infrastructure Item

Broome County’s County Route 48 truss bridge between Vestal and Endicott remains part of longer-term bridge rehabilitation planning. A county notice described July lane closures and alternating one-way traffic during inspection periods connected to design and bidding work expected across 2026 and 2027, with construction anticipated in 2028.

This is not being framed today as an active August 8 detour. The local significance is longer range. County Route 48 connects Vestal and Endicott across the Susquehanna River, and future rehabilitation work will matter for commuters, emergency access, school traffic, local business movement, and west-side Broome County travel.

    PUBLIC SAFETY NOW

Day Hollow Road Crash Leads to Aggravated DWI Charge

New York State Police at Endwell reported a one-vehicle crash on Day Hollow Road in the Town of Union after a 2023 Ford Mustang left the roadway, struck a mailbox, and damaged a lawn. Troopers said the driver showed signs of impairment during the investigation and was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after a reported BAC of .22 percent.

Under NewsXR’s misdemeanor naming policy, the driver is identified here as Jacob, Endicott. State Police said appearance tickets were issued for Union Town Court on August 11.

Weekend Event Traffic and Storm Timing Raise Safety Concerns

Saturday traffic around Broome County includes a mix of Spiedie Fest movement near Otsiningo Park, baseball traffic around Mirabito Stadium, construction-season travel, and afternoon storm chances. Drivers should expect heavier movement near event corridors, avoid distracted driving, and give extra room to pedestrians, families, cyclists, shuttle areas, road crews, and parking-lot traffic.

The weather adds another safety layer today. Thunderstorms can create fast-changing driving conditions, ponding water, poor visibility, and lightning risk for outdoor crowds. Anyone heading to Otsiningo Park, Mirabito Stadium, parks, fields, or outdoor family events should be ready to move inside or to a safer location if thunder is heard.

Doubleday Street Stabbing Case Remains a Recent Public-Safety Case of Interest

A recent Binghamton stabbing case remains active in the public-safety picture after Dominic L. Rought, 23, of Binghamton, was charged in connection with a Doubleday Street incident. The case remains an allegation in the court process, not a conviction.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Editor’s Note: NewsXR generally releases only a first name and city or town for misdemeanor cases, violations and quality-of-life offenses. We reserve the right to weigh additional factors on a case-by-case basis, including public safety, repeat conduct, official charging level, community impact and the public’s right to know.

    WEATHER NOW from NewsXR

A humid Saturday remains in place across Broome County and the Southern Tier, with showers this morning followed by thunderstorm chances this afternoon. The main concern for outdoor plans is not a full-day washout. It is timing. Storms could bring flooding downpours and localized damaging wind gusts, which matters for Spiedie Fest, baseball, road travel, parks, and family events.

Today’s high is expected near 79°F, with an overnight low near 66°F. Anyone heading to Otsiningo Park, Mirabito Stadium, or other outdoor events should keep an eye on the sky and be ready to step away from open fields, tents, metal fencing, parking lots, and exposed areas if thunder develops.

    • Today (Saturday, August 8): Humid with showers this morning and a thunderstorm risk this afternoon. High near 79°F, low near 66°F.
    • Sunday (August 9): Less humid with more clouds than sun. High near 81°F, low near 60°F.
    • Monday (August 10): Periods of clouds and sunshine with an afternoon thunderstorm possible. High near 80°F, low near 65°F.
    • Tuesday (August 11): Considerable cloudiness and humid with isolated thunderstorms. High near 77°F, low near 61°F.

    LOTTO NOW

Top Sports Now: Rumble Ponies Host Hartford Tonight at Mirabito Stadium

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies host the Hartford Yard Goats tonight at Mirabito Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:07 PM. The game gives local fans another Saturday evening option downtown while Broome County is already busy with Spiedie Fest weekend.

The game also follows a historic week for Binghamton. The Rumble Ponies put up 23 runs against Hartford earlier in the series, setting a franchise record for runs in a game and adding extra interest to tonight’s matchup.

High School Fall Sports Paperwork Window Is Closing

Area student-athletes are moving toward the official start of fall sports practices, and families should not wait until the last minute to check physicals, registration steps, and concussion-related paperwork. Missing forms can keep an athlete off the field even when the student is ready to practice.

For Broome County families, this is the practical takeaway: check the district athletic portal, confirm the physical is current, and make sure required forms are submitted before practices begin.

DICK’S Open Has Already Concluded for 2026

The DICK’S Open at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott was held June 22 through June 28, according to En-Joie’s event calendar. That means today’s sports report should not frame En-Joie as entering final staging for this year’s tournament.

The course remains a major local sports and economic asset, and broader conversations about En-Joie’s future, infrastructure needs, and tournament role continue to matter for Endicott and western Broome County. But for today, the accurate sports calendar item is that the 2026 tournament has already passed.

    EVENTS NOW

Spiedie Fest Continues at Otsiningo Park

The 2026 Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally continues today at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton, with official festival information listing the event for Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9. Saturday is one of the weekend’s biggest crowd and traffic days, with food vendors, concert activity, balloon-related events when weather allows, and steady movement around the park.

Festivalgoers should plan for parking demand, changing weather, and possible delays tied to storms. Balloon activity and some outdoor programming can be affected by wind, rain, and lightning, so visitors should watch official festival updates and be ready to adjust plans.

Volleyball Tournament Adds to Weekend Activity

The Spiedie Fest volleyball tournament begins Saturday morning and continues Sunday morning at Otsiningo Park. That adds another layer of foot traffic, field use, parking demand, and family activity around the festival grounds.

First Friday Was Friday, With Art Still Worth Following

Downtown Binghamton’s First Friday Art Walk took place Friday evening, with Broome County Arts Council materials listing First Friday activity from 6 PM to 9 PM. The Artisan Gallery listed an opening reception for Friday, August 7, from 6 PM to 9 PM.

NewsXR is not listing First Friday as a Saturday event unless individual galleries or venues announce Saturday hours or weekend extensions. Readers who saw something they liked Friday should check directly with the gallery or venue for regular Saturday hours.

Cider Mill Stage Looks Ahead to Mean Girls

Cider Mill Stage in Endicott lists Mean Girls: The Musical beginning Friday, August 14, not today. That makes it a “coming soon” arts note rather than a Saturday event listing.

For theater fans, the calendar is still worth watching. The production gives Endicott another arts draw later this month, but it should not be confused with this weekend’s event schedule.

    COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT NOW

Free BC Transit Rides Available for Back-to-School Immunization Appointments

The Broome County Health Department and Broome County Transit are offering free bus rides for children and a parent or guardian traveling to and from back-to-school immunization appointments. Broome County says the rides are available from July 1 through October 31 for appointments at doctors’ offices, walk-ins, or the Broome County Health Department.

This is practical community information for families. Back-to-school vaccine requirements can become a last-minute barrier before classes begin, and transportation can be part of that barrier for households without reliable access to a car. The county says the Health Department immunization clinic is located on BC Transit routes #7 and #8.

Broome County Land Bank Housing Work Continues

The Broome County Land Bank Corporation continues to move housing-rehabilitation work forward in Binghamton and Broome County. Land Bank public records show ARPA-related housing activity, including 27 Columbia Avenue renovation materials, 33 Elm Street renovation contract activity, and broader work tied to returning distressed properties to productive use.

The local value is clear. Every tax-foreclosed, vacant, or distressed property returned to productive use can affect a block, a family, the local tax base, and a neighborhood’s long-term stability. Housing rehabilitation is not just construction. It is part of whether a street feels abandoned or invested in.

THE NIGHTLY WRAP – Friday, August 7, 2026

by NewsXR | Serving Broome County & The Southern Tier

Your closing loop for the day. The facts, tonight.

🌍 World & National News Tonight: Strait of Hormuz Transit and Global Recovery

International Transit Talks and Regional Security:

Diplomatic and maritime-security discussions continued on Friday, August 7, 2026, around proposed Strait of Hormuz transit protocols, including Iranian-monitored inbound channels and Omani-controlled outbound corridors. Following recent maritime disruptions, international maritime administrators and naval liaisons worked to finalize standardized transit safety protocols for commercial cargo vessels. In Europe, international infrastructure teams reported ongoing grid-recovery progress across western sectors of Ukraine to restore electrical stability ahead of the autumn utility cycle.

    Why It Matters Locally:

A disruption in the Strait of Hormuz does not just hit Wall Street—it hits Broome County. Increased shipping insurance and rerouted cargo ships directly dictate wholesale diesel costs for local trucking fleets, which quickly trickles down to higher grocery prices at the checkout line and increased material costs for local construction projects. Local transport companies and regional industrial employers are watching these talks closely as baseline operating expenses fluctuate.

🏛️ Local News Tonight: Battery NY Redevelopment, En-Joie Golf Course Transfer, and ALPR Audits

    The Facts:

    • Battery NY Physical Conversion Begins in Johnson City: Heavy construction and interior physical conversion work officially commenced Friday at the former Gannett Central New York Production Facility off CFJ Boulevard in Johnson City. Turning an empty 10-acre newspaper printing plant into a $114 million advanced manufacturing and research complex signals a major economic shift for the village. It anchors Johnson City’s high-tech revitalization, promising a footprint for future clean-energy jobs and expanding Binghamton University’s presence in the urban core.

    • Broome County Advances En-Joie Course Transfer Proposal: Broome County officials are pushing a formal proposal to take ownership of Endicott’s historic En-Joie Golf Course before the current management deal expires on December 31, 2026. The county argues it has the financial leverage to replace the course’s failing irrigation system—a multi-million dollar necessity to keep the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open in town. However, the Village of Endicott must decide whether to surrender a major municipal asset or solicit outside bids that could complicate the tournament’s long-term future.

    • Binghamton ALPR and Flock Camera Audit Discussions: City officials and community stakeholders reviewed draft compliance frameworks for automated license plate readers (ALPR) and Flock safety cameras across Binghamton. The proposed audit protocols would establish strict rules on how often police can query camera data, how long that data is retained, and who oversees compliance—aiming to balance the undeniable law-enforcement value of tracking suspect vehicles with the public’s right to privacy and civil-liberty protections.

🏗️ Southern Tier & New York News Tonight: NYSDOT Corridor Upgrades and Regional Grants

    The Facts:

    • NYSDOT Region 9 Paving and Corridor Maintenance: The New York State Department of Transportation Region 9 office maintained active daytime work zones along the Interstate 81 and Route 17-I-86 corridors on Friday. Motorists traveling through Broome, Tioga, and Cortland counties should expect rolling lane closures and sudden traffic slowdowns through the weekend. Crews are racing to execute late-summer road repairs, bridge joint maintenance, and safety sign installations before the autumn weather window closes and school bus routes resume.

    • Cortland Memorial Foundation Secures Saint Agatha Foundation Grant: The Cortland Memorial Foundation received a $21,779 grant from the Saint Agatha Foundation on Friday, marking a direct upgrade for regional breast cancer patients. The funding secures a Neoprobe surgical navigation system using gamma detection technology. This allows surgical teams to perform highly precise sentinel lymph node biopsies and targeted tumor localizations, keeping advanced oncological care accessible without forcing patients to travel out of the region.

🚨 Public Safety Tonight: Broome County Arrests, Investigations, and Emergency Responses

      • Alexander J. Fahs, 34, of Endicott, NY, was arrested by Sheriff’s deputies in the Town of Union and charged with First-Degree Criminal Contempt, a Class E Felony, and Third-Degree Criminal Mischief, a Class E Felony.

    • Police Investigations: Binghamton Police Department detectives and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office pursued active leads in an ongoing firearm-discharge and property damage investigation centered around North Street and Moore Avenue in Endwell.

    • Crashes & Road Safety: Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 81 North near Exit 6 in Chenango Bridge on Friday afternoon. The crash caused temporary commuter delays and minor lane restrictions while emergency responders and towing services cleared the roadway. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

    • Fire / EMS / Emergency Response: NYSEG technical crews finalized pressure testing on Route 11 commercial supply lines in Kirkwood following valve maintenance, maintaining normal distribution across the corridor.

    • Public Safety Watch: Local law enforcement maintained a high-visibility security presence across Otsiningo Park and surrounding Binghamton corridors on Friday to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety for the opening day of Spiedie Fest.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    🌤️ Weather Tonight

    Forecast Tonight:

Warm midsummer air and rising humidity remain over the Susquehanna and Chenango river valleys tonight, with an overnight low near 65°F under partly cloudy skies.

    Tomorrow’s Outlook:

Saturday brings continued summer warmth and humidity, with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s and a chance of an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm through the Spiedie Fest weekend.

    En-Joie and DICK’S Open Preparations:

Grounds supervisors at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott continued fine-tuning turf conditions on Friday. With the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open approaching, maintaining PGA Tour Champions-level greens requires precise midsummer water and fertilization management, especially as local humidity and temperatures spike.

Section IV Fall Sports Preseason Reminders:

High school athletic departments across Broome County remind parents that mandatory physical examinations and health portal clearance uploads are due. Missing these registration windows means student-athletes will be barred from taking the field on day one of mandatory varsity and junior varsity preseason tryouts, which begin later this month.

This initiative directly targets neighborhood blight, turning abandoned or tax-foreclosed properties back into taxable, affordable housing for local families.

    • Strand Commons Development in Endicott: The public art park on Washington Avenue continues drawing pedestrian traffic, featuring the illuminated six-foot steel sphere sculpture depicting Endicott’s historic Square Deal Arch. The installation serves as an anchor for downtown revitalization, creating a walkable corridor designed to increase foot traffic for surrounding small businesses.

    • Tobacco-Free Broome & Tioga Grant Pool: Applications remain open for the $35,000 Tobacco-Free Broome & Tioga community grant pool. This is real money available to local municipalities, youth bureaus, and nonprofits willing to implement smoke-free policies in public parks and outdoor spaces, directly funding community health improvements.

    Community Prayer Request

Tonight, we ask our community to join us in prayer for the nurses, first responders, police officers, firefighters, EMS crews, dispatchers, hospital workers, and public servants who remain on duty while many of us prepare to sleep.

As we close our doors, turn off our lights, and settle in for the night, they are still out there. They are patrolling roads, answering calls, helping the sick, responding to emergencies, comforting families, protecting neighborhoods, and carrying responsibilities most people never see.

Thank you, LORD, for these servants. Thank you for their courage, their patience, their sacrifice, and their willingness to keep going when others need help. Bless them, protect them, strengthen them, and bring them safely home to the people who love them.

We also pray for every person they may be called to help tonight. May the hurting find care, may the frightened find comfort, may the sick find healing, and may every responder be guided with wisdom, mercy, and protection.

    Amen.

And Now A Bed-time Story will return tomorrow.

And that’s a Wrap. Goodnight neighbors and friends.

    WEATHER NOW – Thursday, August 6, 2026

    WEATHER NOW from NewsXR

Warm August Air Builds Over the Southern Tier, With Afternoon Storm Chances Becoming the Main Thing to Watch

The Southern Tier is heading into a warm and humid stretch as August settles in over Broome County, but the forecast is no longer as quiet as the earlier outlook suggested. While temperatures remain seasonable to warm through the next several days, the main concern will be the daily chance for showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. For Binghamton, the latest forecast shows showers and a thunderstorm possible later Thursday, drenching thunderstorms possible Friday afternoon, and another afternoon thunderstorm chance on Saturday.

For Binghamton and surrounding communities, Thursday brings a mix of clouds and sunshine with the temperature climbing into the low 80s. The day starts manageable, but humidity increases the midsummer feel, and a couple of showers or a thunderstorm may develop later in the day. Any storm that forms could briefly produce heavier downpours, gusty wind, and quick changes in road conditions, so residents with evening plans should keep an eye on radar before heading out.

Weather Update Alert: NewsXR is updating the earlier Weather Now outlook after the forecast shifted toward a more humid pattern with afternoon shower and thunderstorm chances through Spiedie Fest weekend. This is not an official weather warning, but residents and festivalgoers should stay weather-aware and check conditions before heading out.

Friday, August 7, brings another warm and humid day as Spiedie Fest weekend begins at Otsiningo Park. Conditions do not look like a washout, but festivalgoers should plan for variable clouds and the possibility of afternoon drenching thunderstorms. The best advice for opening-day events is simple: dress for humidity, bring water, use sun protection when the sun breaks through, and have a quick shelter plan if thunder is heard. Friday’s high is expected to reach the lower 80s, with overnight lows staying mild in the upper 60s.

Saturday continues the warm pattern, with clouds, breaks of sun, and another chance for an afternoon thunderstorm. That means outdoor plans across Broome County should remain workable, but not completely weather-proof. Balloon launches, park events, youth sports, walking routes, and backyard gatherings may all depend on timing. As usual in August, one neighborhood may stay dry while another sees a brief downpour, so the practical forecast is not “cancel everything,” but “stay weather-aware.”

Sunday looks a little less humid, though clouds may still outnumber sunshine at times. Temperatures remain near the low 80s, giving the region another warm festival day, but with a somewhat more comfortable feel compared with the stickier air expected Thursday through Saturday.

    Today’s Forecast – Thursday, August 6

Binghamton and the surrounding Southern Tier can expect clouds and sunshine, humid air, and a couple of showers or thunderstorms mainly later in the day. High near 82°F. Low near 66°F.

    Friday, August 7

Humid with variable clouds and a chance for a couple of drenching afternoon thunderstorms. High near 81°F. Low near 67°F.

    Saturday, August 8

Humid with clouds and breaks of sun, with a thunderstorm possible during the afternoon. High near 83°F. Low near 65°F.

    Sunday, August 9

Less humid with more clouds than sun. High near 81°F. Low near 65°F.

    Spiedie Fest Weather Watch

With Spiedie Fest opening Friday and continuing through the weekend, the weather story is timing. The warm air supports a summer festival feel, but the humidity and storm chances mean visitors should check the latest forecast before leaving home, keep phones charged for alerts, and be ready to pause outdoor activity if thunder approaches. Hot air balloon launches are especially sensitive to wind, rain, and storm development, so launch decisions may vary by conditions at the park.

    Weather Safety Reminder

Afternoon storms can build quickly in August. If thunder is heard, move indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, tall isolated trees, water, metal fencing, and exposed park areas until the storm has passed. Drivers should use extra caution during sudden downpours, especially on highways, shaded roads, and low-lying spots where water can collect quickly.

    Weather 100 Years Ago Today

On August 6, 1926, official weather observations in Binghamton recorded fair summer conditions, a high of 81°F, a gentle westerly breeze, and no recorded precipitation. A century later, the temperatures remain familiar for early August, but today’s weather story is more unsettled, with humidity and afternoon storm chances shaping the local forecast.

    SPORTS NOW from NewsXR

Top Sports Now: MLB August Push Turns Prospect Watching Into Local News

Across Major League Baseball, August is where the season starts to separate contenders from clubs already looking toward next year. For Binghamton, that makes the minor-league stretch especially important. The Rumble Ponies are not just playing out the summer schedule. They are part of the Mets’ late-season evaluation system, where new acquisitions, rising prospects, rehab assignments, and organizational depth all become part of the local sports story.

Rumble Ponies Watch: New Faces Making Noise

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies remain one of the region’s main summer sports draws, and Mets prospect coverage this week has highlighted the impact of newer faces in the system. Émilien Pitre, one of the newer additions to the Mets organization, made an immediate mark in Binghamton’s lineup, while pitching performances across the Double-A roster continue to give local fans players to track beyond the nightly box score.

Earlier in the week, Binghamton’s offense also drew attention after Mitch Voit went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Marco Vargas added a home run and two RBIs. That kind of production gives Rumble Ponies fans a reason to watch not only the final score, but the names that may keep moving through the Mets system.

En-Joie and the DICK’S Open Stay at the Center of Broome County Sports

En-Joie Golf Club remains one of the most important sports venues in the Southern Tier because of its long-running connection to the PGA Tour Champions DICK’S Sporting Goods Open. En-Joie identifies itself as a tour-tested championship course in Endicott, and the DICK’S Open is listed as a PGA Tour Champions event tied directly to the course.

That makes the current En-Joie ownership and operations conversation more than a municipal property issue. For local sports fans, course stability, irrigation investment, and long-term management all connect to whether Broome County can keep supporting one of its most visible annual professional sporting events.

    Binghamton Black Bears Offseason Watch

Hockey is still in offseason mode, but the Binghamton Black Bears remain worth watching as roster moves shape the next season. Local coverage has reported offseason returnees and signings, including forward Ivan Bondarenko and defenseman Cheechoo Lathlin, giving fans early names to follow before the winter schedule takes over.

    Section IV Fall Sports Countdown

High school sports are moving from summer conditioning toward paperwork season and preseason preparation. Across Broome County and the Southern Tier, student-athletes and families should be watching district deadlines for physical forms, concussion paperwork, registration portals, and fall tryout information. Football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, swimming, tennis, golf, field hockey, and cheerleading are all heading toward the late-summer launch window.

    What to Watch Next

Local fans should keep their eyes on three things: which Rumble Ponies prospects keep producing in August, how the En-Joie ownership conversation affects confidence around future DICK’S Open planning, and how quickly Section IV schools move from paperwork reminders into full fall practice mode.

Strait of Hormuz Naval Escort Protocols Take Effect as Commercial Tanker Convoys Resume Passage:

International shipping lanes through the Persian Gulf entered a stabilized operational phase on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as newly implemented naval escort protocols took effect in the Strait of Hormuz. Commercial tanker convoys resumed regular transit under multinational security coordination, utilizing Iranian-monitored inbound shipping channels and Omani-controlled outbound corridors.

The security protocols follow ongoing diplomatic discussions in Geneva aimed at securing commercial energy transit. Marine insurance underwriters announced immediate risk-premium adjustments following the resumption of escorted traffic, while U.S. Central Command assets maintained active surveillance across regional waters to ensure uninterrupted passage.

    Why It Matters Locally:

    The Facts:

Broome County officially announced Wednesday that it will not submit a proposal through the Village of Endicott’s newly issued bidding process for the operation and management of En-Joie Golf Course. In an August 4 letter addressed to Endicott Mayor Nick Burlingame and the Village Board, County Executive Jason Garnar and Legislature Chairman Daniel J. Reynolds urged the village to reconsider an alternative proposal that would transition the historic golf course into county ownership when the current five-year management agreement expires on December 31, 2026.

County leaders outlined plans to fund and execute a critical replacement of En-Joie’s aging irrigation system as part of the transfer, ensuring the long-term viability of the course and protecting the future of the annual DICK’S Sporting Goods Open. Endicott’s decision to launch an open request for proposals during the final months of eastern contract negotiations has raised questions among local officials regarding operational continuity for course staff, booked events, and charity tournaments.

Despite the 12-level structure being closed for seven months and enclosed by security fencing and prominent “No Trespassing” warnings, individuals continue to breach the perimeter.

Crews reported conducting mandatory daily sweeps through the multi-level ramp prior to heavy machinery operation, frequently discovering unauthorized individuals sheltering in subterranean lower levels, alongside discarded drug paraphernalia and evidence of warming fires. City officials and safety coordinators emphasize that pre-demolition clearance checks remain vital to protect both trespassers and work crews as the $2.5 million tear-down project progresses toward future surface-lot redevelopment.

    ✨ And Now A Bed-time Story

    And Now A Bedtime Story

    Tom & Lil Susie Continued

Tom and Lil Susie walked side by side through the quiet streets of Binghamton beneath a sky filled with stars. The city that seemed so loud during the day had become peaceful. Only the distant sound of a train whistle and the hum of streetlights broke the silence.

    Susie smiled.

“I told you I’d keep my promise.”

    Tom flicked his tail.

    “Most mice run from me.”

“Maybe that’s because most cats chase them.”

    Tom couldn’t argue with that.

The delicious smell grew stronger with every step until they rounded the corner behind a little neighborhood diner.

    “There it is,” Susie whispered.

    Tom stopped in amazement.

Before him stood a huge green dumpster.

To every human, it was just a garbage container.

    To the mice…

It was the Giant Magic Box.

Unlike most dumpsters, this one had no lid. It stood wide open beneath the night sky, letting its scents drift for blocks. The smell of roasted chicken, hamburgers, fries, fresh bread, vegetables, and forgotten desserts filled the cool evening air.

    Tom’s mouth watered.

    “It smells incredible.”

    Susie wrinkled her tiny nose.

    “It smells… awful.”

Tom looked at her in surprise.

    “Awful?”

    She nodded.

“Most mice will eat meat if they’re desperate enough. When winter comes and there’s nothing else, you eat what you have to. But I’ve never liked it.”

    “What do you eat?”

“Dandelions, clover, wild grasses, seeds, berries when I can find them, and garden vegetables if I’m lucky.”

    Tom blinked.

    “That’s it?”

    Susie smiled.

“My grandmother says every creature has food the LORD made especially for them.”

Tom looked her up and down.

“Is that why you’re so little?”

    She giggled.

“Probably. Grandma says I should eat more. I keep telling her I’d rather be little than smell like old hamburgers.”

Tom laughed so hard he nearly lost his balance.

    “Well… more for me.”

With one graceful leap, Tom landed inside the giant dumpster.

    His eyes grew wide.

    It was like a feast.

Pieces of chicken still clung to bones. Half a hamburger sat beside a bag of fries. There were rolls, bits of cheese, and enough leftovers to feed every stray cat in the city.

Susie remained perched safely on the edge, trying not to breathe through her nose.

    “I’ll stay up here.”

“Suit yourself,” Tom called between bites.

She watched the hungry cat eat. He no longer seemed quite as frightening.

He simply looked like a lonely cat who hadn’t enjoyed a good meal in a very long time.

When Tom had finally eaten his fill, he climbed back out of the dumpster.

Something hung gently from his mouth.

He walked over to where Susie sat and carefully laid it on the ground in front of her.

It was a sweet roll, still wrapped around one side with a bit of white paper and only slightly squished.

    Susie stared at it.

    “For… me?”

Tom looked down at the pastry, then back at the little mouse.

    “I… guess so.”

    “You came back.”

    “Well…”

    Tom hesitated.

“I noticed you didn’t eat much.”

Susie looked at the sweet roll.

“There wasn’t much in there I liked.”

    “I remembered.”

The words surprised Tom as much as they surprised Susie.

    He hadn’t planned to remember.

He hadn’t planned to come back.

He certainly hadn’t planned to carry food out of the dumpster for a mouse.

    Yet somehow…

    …he had.

Susie carefully peeled away the little piece of paper and took a tiny bite.

    Her eyes sparkled.

    “It’s wonderful.”

    Tom couldn’t help but smile.

    “I’m glad.”

For a long moment neither of them spoke.

Susie couldn’t remember anyone outside her own family ever bringing her food.

Tom couldn’t remember the last time he’d shared any.

    The alley grew still.

A warm summer breeze drifted between the brick buildings. Somewhere in the distance, a train whistle echoed through the sleeping city.

    Then…

    A low growl.

    Tom’s ears snapped upright.

    Susie’s whiskers twitched.

    Another growl.

    This one closer.

    Much closer.

Heavy footsteps echoed at the mouth of the alley.

Out of the darkness stepped a massive dog.

His broad shoulders rippled beneath a scarred coat. His lips curled back to reveal long, yellowed teeth. His eyes locked onto Tom without hesitation.

    The growl deepened.

Tom instinctively took a step backward.

    The dog took one forward.

    Tom backed away again.

    The beast matched him.

    Step…

    …for step.

Without realizing it, Tom had been maneuvered exactly where the dog wanted him.

His back pressed against the cold brick wall.

    He glanced left.

    No way out.

    He looked right.

    No escape.

    Straight ahead…

The enormous dog lowered his head and bared every tooth.

    Susie froze.

    Tom’s heart pounded.

The beast took one slow step forward.

    To be continued…

🌙 And that’s a Wrap. Goodnight neighbors and friends.
